CHICAGO FIREARMS PERMIT CLASS
Due to a 2010 Supreme Court ruling, resident s of the City of Chicago can now possess handguns inside the city. Chicago passed an ordinance that governs the possession af all firearms within the city limits. There are several requirement that residents must meet before they can possess handguns in the city. There has also been a shift in the requirements for current rifle and shotgun owners that have their firearms registered in the city.
All gun owners in Chicago must take a Chicago Firearms Permit Course, apply for a permit, and pass a background check. This includes all Chicago residents that have possessed rifles and shotguns in the past.
Permit Requirements
Resident who want to get a permit must take a five hour Chicago Firearms Permit Course taught by a state certified Instructor and Police Officer. The class consists of four hours in the classroom and one hour on the range with live fire.
The class includes instruction in the following subjects:
The dangers and mis-use of firearms
Care and maintenance
Storage
Cleaning
The legal use of firearms including a review of the Chicago ordinance and the Illinois state firearm laws
Ethical and moral considerations for anyone possessing firearms
One hour on the range for live fire using three different caliber pistols
The cost is $125.00. This includes the instruction, range fee, ammunition, and multiple gun rentals. YOU MUST HAVE A VALID FOID CARD TO TAKE THE CLASS.
After completing the class, the students receive a training certificate signed by the instructor that allows them to finish the application process and apply for the Chicago Firearms Permit.
The fee for the permit is $100.00 and there is a one-time $15.00 fee for each firearm registered.
The decision to issue the permit is made by the Chicago Police Department. The city has up to 45 days from the date of the application to issue or deny the application for the permit. There is a background check required.
The Instructor
Paul Warren is a Police Officer in the state of Illinois. He is a certified law Enforcement Firearms Instructor, a certified NRA Instructor, and certified by UTAH and FLORIDA for CCW training.
He teaches beginner firearms safety and handling classes as well as tactical training classes.
COMMON QUESTIONS
Is there an age requirement to take the class?
You must be at least 21 years of age and possess a valid FOID card which you must present at check-in for the class.
Does everyone in the house have to attend the class?
No, however other members of the household must have a Chicago Firearms Permit (CFP) to possess the firearm.
Each CFP only allows the person on the CFP to have one loaded firearm in the residence. I fother persons in the residense have a CFP, then each permit holder can have one loaded firearm in the residence.
How many firearms can be registered at one time?
Each permit holder can register only one firearm per month in most cases.
What type of firearm may be stored in my house?
Any firearm that is registered with the city of Chicago. There is a list of approximately 200 firearms that are not allowed to be registered. Common disqualifying attachments and firearms is covered in the class.
Do all residents of Chicago that currently have firearms registered withb the City of Chiago have to attend this class?
All firearms owners must attend this type of training to continue to register existing firearms in the City.
How are firearms supposed to be stored in my residence?
With a CFP one firearm may be bkept loaded in the residence. All firearms must be secured from unauthorized persons to include children. All other firearms must be secured in a nonfunctioning condition.
